SPARKS, Md., May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- McCormick & Company, Incorporated (NYSE: MKC), a global leader in flavor, today announced that Dunsin Fadojutimi of Eastern Technical School and Alcedo Hodge Jr. of Maritime Industries Academy are the 76th and 77th recipients of the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship. Established in 1969, the scholarship currently has a four-year value of $40,000 for each student athlete.
The scholarship winners were chosen from a total of 118 candidates who were the Unsung Heroes from 73 Baltimore area public, private, parochial and independent schools. Fadojutimi and Hodge are both seniors, a requirement of the program.
Fadojutimi's self-driven nature is what made her a stand-out for the award. As the only player on her team who had never played basketball on an organized team before, what she lacked in previous experience she made up for with determination to be a contributing teammate. Also, by not living in an area served by a school bus, Fadojutimi relied on the MTA to get to school for practice, often getting home late at night but showing her commitment to the team nonetheless. Her coach, Kim O'Connor, said, "Dunsin is remarkably mature, poised and self-directed. She accepts responsibility and determinedly works to her goals." Fadojutimi plans to attend Lincoln University in the fall.
Hodge Jr. showed his versatility as a team player for his willingness to transition from playing middle linebacker to nose guard, putting him against opposing players that outweighed him substantially. His coach, Samuel Brown, said he excelled in that position as well as a team leader to younger players. "He builds up his team's self-esteem by encouraging the younger players to be their best. He strives unselfishly to be a leader and mentor to those who may not have developed the perseverance to become one of the top players on the field. From him, his teammates know quitting is not an option."
The late Charles Perry McCormick Sr. founded the McCormick Unsung Heroes program in 1940 to recognize athletes for unselfish team play and highlight the efforts of those who contribute to the success of their teams without acclaim. In 1969, the scholarship was added to the program in his honor.
The keynote remarks were given by Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Denver Broncos and the NFL's only five-time MVP and a 14-time Pro Bowl selection.
More than 700 Baltimore area officials, school administrators, coaches and family members attended the event on May 4th.
